We pulled 2020 Ram 1500 insurance quotes for one New York City driver from three major carriers on the same day, with the same coverage, and the same clean record. The gap was wide.

GEICO came back at $1,096.30 for six months. State Farm came back at $2,182.78 for the same six months. That is a difference of $1,086.48 for what is, on paper, the same protection on the same truck.

The point of this exercise is simple. Carriers price the exact same profile very differently, and the only way to know who is cheapest for you is to check more than one. Below is the full breakdown of what each carrier quoted, what coverage they included, and what pushed the prices apart.

The Driver Profile

Every quote used the identical inputs. Here is the profile we submitted to each carrier:

  • Age 29, male, single
  • New York, NY, ZIP 10001 (Manhattan)
  • 2020 Ram 1500 Big Horn, financed through a lienholder
  • Homeowner, master’s degree, works as a security guard
  • Clean record: zero accidents, zero violations, no DUI
  • Licensed 13 years with no coverage lapse
  • Nine years of prior coverage with the same carrier
  • About 18,000 miles a year, primary use marked as pleasure

This is close to a best-case profile. A clean record, long tenure, homeownership, and a graduate degree all point rates down. Even so, the 2020 Ram 1500 insurance quotes ranged by more than a thousand dollars for the same six months.

The Coverage Package

We asked each carrier for the same coverage so the numbers would compare fairly:

  • Bodily injury liability: 100/300 (that is $100,000 per person, $300,000 per accident)
  • Property damage liability: $100,000
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist: matched at 100/300
  • Collision deductible: $500
  • Comprehensive deductible: $500

All three carriers reached these target limits, so the liability and deductible lines match across the table. New York also mandates personal injury protection under its no-fault law, so every quote carries state PIP whether the shopper picks it or not. One carrier, State Farm, bundled extra New York options on top, and that matters for the comparison. More on that below.

Two caveats apply before the carrier detail. All three of these are no-credit-hit estimates. Our test profile has no credit file, so none of the carriers could pull a credit-based insurance score.

In the real world your score can move a premium a lot in either direction, which is why we treat these as directional, not exact. If you want to understand how much that one factor swings a rate, read our explainer on your credit-based insurance score.

The State Farm number also is not a clean apples-to-apples match. Its package folded in two optional New York coverages, OBEL and additional PIP, that the other two carriers left out. Those add real protection and real cost, so part of State Farm’s higher price is more coverage, not just a pricier company. We break that out below.

GEICO: The Low Number on This Profile

GEICO produced the lowest 2020 Ram 1500 insurance quote in this test at $1,096.30 for six months, or about $182.72 a month. That total already reflected roughly $232 in savings the quote applied on its own. The coverage matched our target on every liability and deductible line, with New York PIP included as the state requires.

Two small caveats sit behind that price. First, GEICO could not find an insurance score for our profile, so the number is a no-credit-hit estimate. Second, GEICO’s quote flow did not offer the exact Big Horn crew-cab trim, so we selected the closest body style it listed, a four-door pickup. That can nudge the rate slightly.

We declined GEICO’s DriveEasy telematics program, so no usage tracking is baked into this figure. On this profile, GEICO was the clear price leader.

Progressive: The Middle, with a Pay-in-Full Discount

Progressive landed in the middle at $1,523.00 for six months on a monthly plan, or about $253.83 a month. That is $426.70 more than GEICO for matching coverage. Progressive did show a meaningful discount for paying the full six months up front. The pay-in-full price dropped to $1,451, a savings of $72 over the monthly plan.

Progressive also hit the no-credit-hit path, so its price is a no-credit estimate like the others. We declined its Snapshot telematics program and its bundle offer, keeping the quote to auto only. Like GEICO, Progressive did not list the exact Big Horn trim, so we picked the closest crew-cab body style. The takeaway for a Progressive shopper is to ask about the pay-in-full discount, because on this profile it trimmed the price by a real amount.

State Farm: Highest Price, but More Coverage in the Box

State Farm was the highest at $2,182.78 for six months, or $363.79 a month. That is $1,086.48 above GEICO, which looks dramatic until you read what is inside the policy. State Farm’s package quietly added two optional New York coverages, OBEL of $25,000 and additional PIP of $100,000, that GEICO and Progressive did not include. Those extras raise the price, so this quote is not a straight match to the other two.

State Farm did have the exact 2020 Ram 1500 Big Horn crew-cab trim in its system, so no body-style guess was needed there. We declined its Drive Safe and Save telematics program, and on this run the enrollment toggle was removable, so no tracking discount is assumed in the figure. State Farm’s number is also a no-credit-hit estimate. If you strip the extra New York coverages back out, the gap to the others would narrow, though on this profile State Farm still priced above both.

What Drives 2020 Ram 1500 Insurance Prices in New York

New York City is one of the most expensive places in the country to insure a vehicle, and a Manhattan ZIP like 10001 sits near the top. Dense traffic, high repair and medical costs, and a large share of uninsured and underinsured claims all push premiums up. The Insurance Information Institute tracks New York as a consistently high-cost auto market, and city ZIPs carry the heaviest loading within the state. You can see how New York stacks up against other states in our car insurance by state guide.

The truck itself matters too. A full-size pickup like the 2020 Ram 1500 carries a higher physical-damage cost than a compact sedan, because the parts and body panels cost more to repair or replace. That flows straight into your collision and comprehensive lines.

Choosing a higher deductible is one lever a Ram owner can pull to bring those lines down, and our deductibles explainer walks through the trade-off. The vehicle-type effect is real across the market, and our car insurance rates by vehicle type breakdown shows how pickups compare to other body styles.

The last driver of price is the one you cannot see on a quote form: how each carrier weights your profile. GEICO, Progressive, and State Farm all ran the same clean 29-year-old New York driver and returned three very different numbers. That spread is the whole reason to shop. The cheapest carrier on this profile may not be the cheapest on yours.

How to Save on Insurance

Use these steps to bring your own 2020 Ram 1500 insurance quote down before you buy.

  • Get at least three quotes on the same coverage. The spread in this test was more than $1,000 for identical limits, and the only way to catch that is to compare more than one carrier.
  • Match the coverage line by line before you compare prices. State Farm looked far more expensive here partly because it added optional New York coverages the others left out. A cheaper quote with less protection is not always the better deal.
  • Ask about the pay-in-full discount. Progressive cut $72 off simply for paying the six months up front, and most carriers offer some version of it.
  • Raise your deductible if you have savings to cover it. Moving from a $500 to a $1,000 collision deductible often shaves the physical-damage lines, which matter on a pickup.
  • Report your real annual mileage. Lower yearly miles and a pleasure-use marking, rather than a long commute, can lower the rate.
  • Recheck your rate every renewal. Carriers adjust their pricing models, and the cheapest company one year is often not the cheapest the next.
