2022 Honda Pilot Insurance: What Three Carriers Actually Quoted

A 2022 Honda Pilot insurance quote can swing by hundreds of dollars depending on the carrier, even when the driver and the coverage stay identical. We ran the same profile through GEICO, Progressive, and Liberty Mutual for a single driver in Troy, Michigan, and the six-month premiums landed anywhere from $906 to $1,797.50. That’s an $891.50 gap on the exact same car, the exact same coverage, and the exact same person.

This isn’t a hypothetical. We pulled real 2022 Honda Pilot insurance quotes using one driver profile and the same coverage limits at every carrier. The results below show what this specific profile actually paid, not an industry average.

The Driver Profile

  • 49-year-old female driver, single, in Troy, MI (ZIP 48084)
  • Licensed 6 years, clean record: 0 accidents, 0 violations, no DUI in the past 5 years
  • Employed as a chef, bachelor’s degree
  • Owns the vehicle outright, no lienholder
  • Drives 10,000 miles a year, commutes 13 miles each way
  • Prior carrier: USAA, insured 1 year, no lapse in coverage
  • 2022 Honda Pilot EX-L, primary use is commuting

The Coverage Package

Every carrier below was quoted at the same target limits, so the price differences come from underwriting, not coverage:

  • Bodily injury liability: 100/300
  • Property damage liability: $100,000
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist: Yes
  • Collision deductible: $500
  • Comprehensive deductible: $500

Michigan also requires Personal Injury Protection (PIP) on every policy. GEICO and Liberty Mutual both quoted this driver at unlimited PIP medical, which roughly 70% of Michigan drivers still choose (Source: Insurance Alliance of Michigan, June 2024), adding real cost on top of the liability and physical damage coverage above.

State Farm and Travelers were both on our list for this profile but didn’t return a quote this round. State Farm’s online funnel rejected the address before rating could start, and Travelers doesn’t offer full online quoting to every Michigan applicant. We’ll update this post if we capture either one on a later run.

GEICO Came in Lowest on This Profile

GEICO quoted this 2022 Honda Pilot insurance profile at $906 for six months, the lowest of the three carriers tested. The quote matched the target coverage exactly, including 100/300 liability and $500/$500 deductibles, with unlimited PIP medical added automatically to satisfy Michigan’s no-fault requirement.

Two catches here: GEICO’s quote is a no-credit-hit estimate, since this profile is synthetic and carries no real credit file. Real applicants with an actual credit history will see a number that reflects their credit-based insurance score, which can move the price up or down.

GEICO also auto-applied its paperless billing discount during the quote, even though this driver’s stated preference was paper billing. That discount is baked into the $906 figure, so a driver who insists on paper statements might not see it.

Progressive Landed in the Middle

Progressive quoted $1,160 for six months, about $254 more than GEICO on the same coverage. The quote matched every target limit, and Progressive’s own no-fault PIP handling tracked the same Michigan requirements as GEICO’s.

Progressive also runs Snapshot, its usage-based telematics program, and we declined it during this quote per our standard testing rules. That means this number reflects Progressive’s base rate without any telematics discount, even though this driver profile is open to a telematics program in general. A driver who opts into Snapshot could see a lower number than what’s listed here. One more note: Progressive’s system quoted a generalized SUV trim rather than the specific EX-L trim, since Progressive’s vehicle database didn’t offer that distinction for this VIN pattern.

Liberty Mutual Quoted the Highest, but Bundles in a Telematics Discount

Liberty Mutual came in at $1,797.50 for six months, nearly double GEICO’s price on the same target coverage. Getting to that number took several coverage edits after the initial quote, since Liberty Mutual’s default quote starts below target and has to be raised limit by limit.

Liberty Mutual automatically applies its RightTrack telematics discount to every quote, with no way to opt out inside the online funnel. That actually lines up with this driver’s stated interest in telematics programs, so the discount isn’t a mismatch here, but it’s worth knowing that the $1,797.50 figure already reflects a telematics discount rather than a fully undiscounted base rate. Liberty Mutual’s PIP structure also differs from GEICO and Progressive: instead of unlimited medical, it packages $250,000 in medical coverage plus $1 million in Personal Protection Insurance (PPI), which is a different structure than the unlimited PIP the other two carriers quoted. That difference in PIP structure is part of why Liberty Mutual’s price sits so far above the other two, alongside its underwriting for this specific profile.

Why 2022 Honda Pilot Insurance Costs So Much in Michigan

Michigan is one of the most expensive states in the country to insure any vehicle, and the 2022 Honda Pilot is no exception. The state’s no-fault law requires drivers to carry PIP coverage for their own medical bills after a crash, and most drivers still choose the unlimited tier. Triple-I reports that Michigan’s 2019 no-fault reforms improved affordability statewide, but unlimited PIP still adds real cost to every quote compared to states that don’t require it.

Still, the reform moved the needle. A Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services report found that the reform law cut average auto insurance costs for Michiganders by $357 per vehicle. Independent reporting has questioned whether the 2019 reform lowered costs for all drivers uniformly (Source: Michigan Public, Dec. 2025). Even with that improvement, Michigan drivers still pay some of the highest premiums in the country because of the state’s unlimited PIP option and ongoing Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association assessment increases tied to those unlimited policies.

Uninsured drivers are also part of the 2022 Honda Pilot insurance picture. The Insurance Research Council found Michigan’s uninsured motorist rate dropped by 5 percent between 2020 and 2022, the largest decline of any state in that period, after the state had the highest uninsured rate in the country back in 2019. That downward trend is good news for Michigan drivers, but insurers still price in some risk from uninsured motorists, which is part of why the uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage on this quote matters even for a driver with a clean record.

Troy sits in the Detroit metro area, which tends to carry higher rates than rural parts of the state due to traffic density and claims frequency. A driver in a smaller Michigan town could see a lower number than the quotes above on the same 2022 Honda Pilot insurance profile.

The vehicle itself plays a role too. A 2022 Honda Pilot EX-L carries a higher replacement value than a base trim, which pushes up comprehensive and collision premiums since those coverages are priced off what it costs to repair or replace the car. The 2022 Honda Pilot earned ‘Good’ ratings on IIHS’s original moderate overlap, side, roof-strength, and head-restraint tests, but scored ‘Acceptable’ on the small-overlap test and did not qualify for IIHS’s Top Safety Pick award. Under IIHS’s updated, tougher 2022 side and moderate-overlap tests, it scored Marginal and Poor — so its safety profile is mixed, not uniformly strong. (Source: IIHS 2022 Honda Pilot ratings) Those two factors pull in opposite directions on a 2022 Honda Pilot insurance quote: the vehicle’s price tag raises physical damage coverage costs, while its safety record helps hold liability costs down.

Household size matters here as well for this 2022 Honda Pilot insurance profile. This driver profile lists four residents in the household, which some carriers weigh when pricing liability exposure, even for a single policyholder with no listed co-drivers. Combined with the no-fault PIP requirement and the Detroit metro location, that’s a lot of Michigan-specific pricing factors stacked on top of the vehicle itself.

How to Save on Insurance

A few concrete moves can lower a 2022 Honda Pilot insurance bill without dropping coverage that actually matters:

  1. Shop all three PIP tiers if your state allows a choice. Michigan lets drivers pick reduced PIP levels instead of unlimited if they have other qualifying health coverage. That single choice can cut hundreds off the premium.
  2. Ask each carrier about its telematics program before you decline it. GEICO, Progressive, and Liberty Mutual all handle usage-based discounts differently, and one program might reward your actual driving habits more than another.
  3. Re-shop every 12 months, not just at renewal. Rates move often enough that last year’s cheapest carrier isn’t guaranteed to be this year’s cheapest.
  4. Raise your deductible if you have savings to cover it. Moving from a $500 to a $1,000 collision deductible usually lowers the premium, though the right amount depends on your emergency fund. Our deductibles guide walks through how to pick a number that fits your budget.
  5. Check your credit-based insurance score before you shop. Michigan law lets insurers use a credit-based insurance score in auto rating, but bans using it to deny, cancel, or refuse to renew your policy — worth knowing if a quote leans on your credit. (Source: MCL 500.2153) Our guide to credit scores versus credit-based insurance scores explains the difference and how to improve yours.
  6. Compare quotes by vehicle type, not just by carrier. An SUV like the Pilot prices differently than a sedan or truck on the same policy. Our rates by vehicle type guide breaks down what drives that gap.

None of this means cutting coverage you need. The $891.50 gap between GEICO and Liberty Mutual on this exact profile shows how much underwriting and discount stacking vary carrier to carrier, so the real savings usually come from shopping the same limits at more than one company rather than cutting coverage to hit a lower number.
